iLuminate Tours Central Asiaon 2013/04/02 01:42:00.
iLuminate is currently touring Central Asia! We just arrived in Kazakhstan after spending almost two weeks in Kyrgystan. While in Kyrgystan, we performed and taught master classes in Bishkek and Karakol, all of which, were truly amazing experiences! The people in Kyrgystan could not have been more accommodating and just ecstatic that we were there!
All of our performances were sold out and every master class was a huge success!! Founder, Miral Kotb, also spoke a universities, and appeared on local Kyrgystan television programs, alongside choreographers John “JRock” Nelson and Dario Mejia. We even had an opening act in Bishkek that blew us away! The act consisted of performances from the winners of Best Studio in Central Asia, a solo performance from the winner of Best Popper, Locker, and online video in Central Asia, and a performance from a group of dancers with physical challenges that was unbelievably inspirational! It was an honor to have these talented dancers open the show for us! The people in Kyrgystan love dance and they were truly amazed at everything about us! We received gifts, took pictures, signed autographs, and made many new friends that we will treasure forever! Just being allowed to come into someone else’s country and share what we love and be met with such wonderful enthusiasm is truly phenomenal! Some of our new friends even took us around the city to the beautiful national park, Ala Archa, many wonderful restaurants (the food is amazing!), local shopping, and some of the best spots for nightlife! We were sad to leave Kyrgystan, but we are excited to experience all that Kazakhstan has to offer!
iLuminate at the Kids' Inaugural Concerton 2013/02/02 01:42:00.
The lovely first lady, Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden extended an invitation for us to perform for the 2013 Kid's Inaugural Concert and we quickly accepted. The concert derives from a tradition that started in 2009, where military families are celebrated for their sacrifices and service for our country. The building was packed with proud visitors, military officials, and even more confident locals.
We took to the stage to perform our amazing choreography set to the UK Hearthrobs One Direction's single "Glad You Came". The audience went BANANAS once Nick Cannon introduced us and the lights went out.
We danced our poor hearts out in front of the 1st family and all of their friends and guests. We were able to share the same stage with Katy Perry, Far East Movement, Mindless Behavior, Usher, Soul Children of Chicago with Black Violin, and the amazing cast of Glee.
The atmosphere in Washington, DC was incredible. The experience alone was monumental. It was a quick moment of unimaginable bliss and we were truly honored to partake in entertainment history. Check out some pics of us getting ready backstage and some more outside of our suits with other performers and important guests.
Special Guests at Artist of Lighton 2013/01/03 17:54:11.
We were beyond honored to have two very important guests in our audience last night: Gabby Giffords, former Arizona Democratic Congresswoman, and astronaut Mark Kelly attended our shows with their friends and family. They stayed afterwards and met the cast and crew. It was truly remarkable to have them share the night with us. Thank you so much for supporting iLuminate!
New Year's Eve Performance at Webster Hallon 2013/01/01 17:25:19.
iLuminate was asked to perform at Webster Hall on New Year's Eve. We performed the same set we performed on the Wendy Williams show, and the audience loved it! The place was packed with screaming NYE partiers, and they went crazy as soon as the dancers stepped on the stage! The rest of our dancers and crew watched from our VIP balcony on the top floor. Afterwards, we all rang in the New Year together with an iLuminate bang.
Happy New Year everyone!
"It was a blast!!" -- J Rock Nelson
"I loved it and really hope we do it again next year!" -- Mary Cebrian
Chris Brown Team Members visit Artist of Lighton 2012/12/28 14:09:11.
As many of you may know, Miral Kotb designs the technology for many of Chris Brown's performances. We were so happy to have some of his team check out our show Wednesday night! They loved the show and we loved having them in the audience! Special thanks to Steven Bryson, DJ Baby Drew, and Mona Bernsten for coming out. Good luck on tour!
Sold Out!on 2012/12/27 13:01:57.
We are selling out almost every Artist of Light show now. The front row of the audience is basically on the stage with us, but we love the energy! There's only a little over a week of shows left, so get your tickets now!
Secret Santaon 2012/12/26 12:52:35.
The cast and crew had Secret Santa and a Christmas Party on the Saturday before Christmas! We all loved our presents and had a wonderful time celebrating the holiday with each other and eating good food between our shows. Happy holidays everyone!
iLuminate Together Againon 2012/12/12 22:26:00.
Today we had the amazing opportunity of performing for our iLuminate family! Several of our dancers, techs, and wardrobe from our traveling teams came to see our matinee. It was such a pleasure to perform for them and have their support in the audience! We also felt the pressure, because our family are our hardest critics. However, they all loved the show and it was wonderful to have them all here! iLuminate really is a wonderful family!
Billboard in Times Squareon 2012/12/08 14:30:06.
We are all very excited about the new billboard we have up in Times Square! It is right above our theatre and advertises iLuminate, as well as Artist of Light. With the enormous volume of traffic that passes by it daily, it is a wonderful way to advertise for our company and our off Broadway show! Make a trip to NYC this holiday season and check out our billboard, and then "Artist of Light"!
"The billboard is just the welcome mat for our NY Jumbotron ad! Get ready NY!" -- Marcus Cobb
iLuminate on the Wendy Williams Showon 2012/12/04 14:27:00.
Performing on The Wendy Williams Show was a fabulous experience from start to finish! The crew was superbly professional and polite. We felt like superstars from the minute we walked in the door. Wendy loved us and we loved her!
"Watching it backstage I just felt immense pride for this amazing team of dancers, technicians, costumers, marketers and our fantastic publicist, Juli Nadler, of Susan Blonde Inc. Thanks to everyone for their amazing work." -- Miral Kotb
"Wendy Williams Show was amazing...the staff was beyond generous and that audience was sooooo liiiivvveeee :) ... we ripped the stage and loved every minute of it...blessed :)" -- Lisa "L-Boogie" Bauford
Dancin' in the Streetson 2012/12/03 13:39:00.
Some of our dancers performed in Times Square today to promote "Artist of Light." We attracted quite the crowd, and even had some audience participation! Such a fun and exciting way to get the news out about our fabulous off-Broadway show! Here are some pictures.
Thanks Good Morning America!on 2012/11/16 13:27:20.
It was such a pleasure performing on Good Morning America! Although we had to get up VERY early, the producers of the show made it a great experience for us. One of our castmates, Marcus, celebrated his birthday back stage so it was quite special for him as well.
It must have been "Dance Day" at GMA because some of us even bumped into fellow Juilliard Alumni. They were dancing in the Broadway production of Spiderman! Very cool.
We're excited for our next live Television appearance, which will be coming soon. We'll be sure to keep you posted!
Tomorrow iLuminate Takes Over Good Morning Americaon 2012/11/14 10:56:20.
This weekend I set off to Frankfurt, Germany to program Chris Brown's tour. The opening of his show is all iLuminate! And he has several different looks using our LED wireless lighting system and light suits! It's always a pleasure working with such a creative talent like Chris! He has a clear vision of what he wants and trusts me to get it done without too much supervision. It is an honor to have such creative trust in what I do by one of the most popular and talented musical artists in the world.
Our choreographers Dario Mejia and Marcus Cobb used the weekend to visit their hometowns of Minnesota and Atlanta to catch up with family and friends before the show schedule begins.
Now that we're all finally back in New York, we have a big announcement: We're going to be on Good Morning America tomorrow at 8:30am!
We're ecstatic that we'll be making our Morning television debut on such a major show; it's been a while since America's Got Talent after all. The team has been working very hard to get this New York show together and is so grateful that they get to strut their stuff on such a huge stage. More than that, we are happy we get to share what we've been working on with all our light dance fans all over the country. Be sure to tune in or set your DVRs for a sneak preview of what you'll see at the Duke Theatre this Holiday Season, from November 23 -- January 5th. Don't forget to check Facebook for 20%, 30% and STUDENT discount codes!
Also if you check out a show during our opening weekend, November 23-25, you can save 40%!
Hurricane Sandyon 2012/10/30 15:31:47.
This picture of iLuminate choreographer Marcus Cobb was taken by dancer Lisa 'L-Boogie' Bauford.
Although Lisa is originally from Florida, this is her first hurricane in the North. Luckily she's in Brooklyn where right now land is actually dry, but the wind and trees have done some serious damage.
Wherever you're experiencing #HurricaneSandy we're with you!
JRock on Choreography Processon 2012/10/25 22:31:16.
The choreography process always starts with the script and then from there we begin visualizing things that can only be seen in the dark. We try to do something we haven't performed yet or work on improving an illusion we've created in the past. We're all really strong dancers so we also work our choreography around everyone's individual abilities. We need the dancing to really tell the story since we don't use any form of verbal communication. We get input from everyone in the room and work with ideas on how to bring everything to life.
The most difficult part of the process is visualizing what it's going to look like in the light because what you visualize in your head ends up looking totally different in the light suits. For that reason we sometimes have to change things on the spot, but on the other hand it can end up working out really well.
One really cool thing about the light dance technology is that we're able to do things in front a live audience that may seem impossible. We're able to make dancers fly or even look like they have six arms and the audience has no idea how we did it.
Can't wait for you to see what we came up with!
Original Music for Artist of Lighton 2012/10/17 12:00:00.
iLuminate strives to be original in everything we do, and our music for the show is no different. That's why we are so excited to be working with two very talented people who have worked with some of the top acts in the music business to curate original composition and music that will complement our script and take the audience on the exciting journey that is Artist of Light.
Music Director King Kanobby has worked with people as diverse as Far East Movement, John Legend, and the legendary Quincy Jones. Among his many credits, he provided the musical score for Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa's "Mac and Devin Go to High School."
Composer Christopher Tignor's work as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and interactive software engineer is best known through his releases with his bands Slow Six, Wires.Under.Tension, and under his own name across six LP's and numerous compilations on the Western Vinyl and New Albion labels. As a touring musician, orchestral arranger, and Avant composer, Tignor has played venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and the Mercury Lounge.
Music is so imperative to our shows. Without any written dialogue, we must rely on music, movement, and the light technology to help share a compelling story with the audience. The music sets the tone for the show and helps bring out an emotional response from the audience, all without one spoken word or even the benefit of seeing the performers' faces. Since iLuminate uses dancers who specialize in every kind of dance from hip hop to contemporary to Bboys, our musical team must create music that complements each dancer's talent. Learn how Kanobby creates an original piece of music:
"Miral and the team, they know the feel and the vibe that they want to create for different pieces in the show. They might give me a reference and then I pull things that I like at home and then when I get to rehearsal and see the motions of dancers, it allows me to not only tweak the song but tailor it for each character. Every piece of music that's been delivered for Artist of Light is unique to the show and the characters."
Stay tuned for more behind the scenes posts, pictures and insight into the production behind our New York City show. We hope that you'll come out this November to the Duke Theatre.
I speak for myself and the whole iLuminate team when I thank you, as always, for your continued support!
